Movement in art and architecture in Europe
and North America about 1750-1850, a revival
of classical art, which superseded the Rococo
style. It was partly inspired by the
excavation of the Roman cities of Pompeii and
Herculaneum. The architect Piranesi was an
early Neo-Classicist; in sculpture Canova and
in painting David were exponents. Others
include Thorvaldsen (sculpture), Ingres
(painting), and Robert Adam (architecture).
